A Tradition Of Futility

Coinciding with $10 million worth of renovations, the Mets announced yesterday that their Spring Training facility in Port St. Lucis, FL, previously named Thomas J. White Stadium, has been re-christened "Tradition Field".

Mets COO Jeff Wilpon said:
"We couldn't have a more perfect name for our newly renovated stadium. Tradition Field is a classic name that is not only synonymous with the Treasure Coast, but also with the first-rate values of our organization. We know our fans will enjoy all the tremendous new amenities."
Once I finished gagging myself with a stick, it didn't take long to surmise that the Mets borrowed a page from the Yankees' book, whose own Spring Training facility is similarly yet less ambiguously named "Legends Field".

Feedback: What do you think of the new name? What "tradition" is it emblematic of?

Comments

A tradition of following the legends. Pretty sickening if you ask me.

What the...?

Well. Whatever tradition it is, I'm sure proud of it.

"Core Communities will pay at least $150,000 annually for 10 years to get naming rights to the former Thomas J. White Stadium, Mets Chief Operating Officer Jeff Wilpon said. The name comes from Core's biggest development - Tradition, a 16,000-home community west of Interstate 95."

So...the Mets tracked down a real estate company that had a development that sounded something like the name of the Yankees field, and then convinced that company to give the Mets $150,000 to name the field after that development so they could sound more like the Yankees?

Let's just be glad it's not "Core Communities Field".

They should'v gone with something classy like "McGraw Park" or "Brian Cole Stadium"

Hey Ed, thanks for stopping by. I'm a big fan of NYFS. Anyway, since Core Communities is sponsoring the park, the best the Mets could have hoped for was Tradition Field, since "Tradition" is actually a name of one of Core Communities housing developments.
