Let The Games Begin

2004 is officially underway, as the Mets had their first intra-squad exhibition game yesterday at Tradition Field. There were lots of good signs among some of the younger Mets players. Jose Reyes, who reportedly has added 15 pounds of mostly muscle over the winter, jacked a homerun into the wind from the left side of the plate. David Wright also hit a two-run bomb while going 3-3.

Scott Kazmir, the Mets top pitching prospect, also impressed, though not with the heat this time. Despite his ability to bring the gas in the high 90's, Kazmir dropped a backdoor changeup on Craig Brazell that left him holding his junk:
"He really had a lot of zip on the ball, and it gets on you quickly. Then he threw that changeup that backdoored me; it was a great pitch."
Kazmir also has a nasty slider. Brazell, meanwhile, has apparently been putting on a power clinic in batting practice this week, after hitting 17 homeruns in 111 games last season.

If Wright is traded, I swear, I am gonna be really mad.

I'm not sure who he would even be traded to. Fred Wilpon has repeatedly stressed that this team is about the kids, and seems to be attached to these guys moreso than Jim Duquette. Texas certainly doesn't need Wright, so unless you could get a Beltran + extension + move to right field, I don't see him going anywhere.

If Wright were to be traded, the best fit would be Oakland in a deal for Eric Chavez. That would be the only way I'd include him in a deal. If Wright became the player Chavez is, I think we would all be pretty darn happy!

I can see that. It would have to be under the stipulation that a long-term deal could be worked out with Chavez. Wright projects to have better discipline numbers, but we should be so lucky that he has the power and exceptional defense of Chavez.

Hopefully Wright won't have the same R/L split problems that Chavez has. Even though you could never platoon a player like Chavez, it might be wise if you had a servicable backup. This is the type of thing that teams will exploit in the postseason.

As for Kazmir, I just hope the Mets don't have any bright ideas about putting him on the 25 man roster. I've never been a fan of trial by fire. I just hope it doesn't have a detrimental effect on Jeremy Bonderman, the 20 year old who was thrown to the wolfs last year in Detroit for no reason.

I can't seem to find minor league splits anywhere, so I don't know how Wright has faired in that respect.

Kazmir definitely won't be with the big club this season. He'll start at AA Binghamton, and may reach AAA Norfolk by the end of the season. The Mets have kept him on a very strict pitch count in an effort to avoid the fate that struck Isringhausen, Pulsipher, and Wilson. They've been babying him a bit, so we'll see if they loosen the reins a bit this year.
