More Anti-Mets Sentiment

Lawrence Rocca, The Star Ledger's answer to Jon Heyman and Friends, wrote a touching piece entitled "Mets are robbing their fans of quality baseball". I'll let you read it yourself, as it's nigh 500 words about how the Mets aren't as good as the Yankees, etc. It's shabby journalism, with numerous loaded statements and overexaggerations. Here's one of my favorites:
One good faith effort probably would have fooled Mets fans this winter, just one.

[...]

They have repeatedly passed on Alfonso Soriano, who could have played second base until Jose Reyes returned and then moved to right field, where the Mets have Whiz Kids Karim Garcia and Shane Spencer, who should have been released for their spring training fight with the pizza delivery boy but were not purely for budgetary reasons.
As of today, Garcia and Spencer have combined to hit .320/.358/.503 with five homeruns while Yankee corner outfielders Gary Sheffield and Hideki Matsui are hitting .289/.400/.422 with four homeruns. Of course, the Yankee outfielders are making $28 million dollars this year. The Mets? $1.5 million. Maybe the stats won't look like this in September, but it's pretty interesting, even a month into the season.

Wow, the feeding frenzy has officially started. Just imagine what the press would be doing if the Mets did what they probably should be doing - an all out, unabashed rebuilding project. Actually, I may be way off here, but maybe the press/fans would give the team a pass if the Mets were up front, gutted the team, slashed some prices, and made a bona fide effort to build toward 2006.

I know you and I would be on board with that, Norm. I would much rather the Mets spend $30 million and know they won't be competitive than get my hopes up with the likes of the current $80 million crap factory that still doesn't compete. It's at the point now that the future isn't even looking as bright as it did a month-or-so ago. Who knows when/if Reyes will be at full strength, Kazmir is alleged to be fragile, Justin Huber and Mike Jacobs are both hitting poorly through the first month of the season. David Wright is laying waste to AA pitching, so we have that to look forward to.

I think I have to agree with Norm. The $80 payroll is a blind anyway -- Vaughn, Piazza, Leiter, Glavine, and Floyd make $54.5 this year. Vaughn's career is over and the other four ain't goin' nowhere.

This means the Mets are really spending about $25 million on twenty other players, half of which are grizzled veterans past their prime. I say release 'em and bring up Brazell, Diaz, Jacobs, and Ring -- even if they're not ready.

I would rather the Mets lose with youth than experience. Experience is something that can easily be gained, youth is something that can only be lost. And youth is so much more fun to watch.

That article makes me sick to my stomach.

Rocca topped himself with this beauty, only two days later:

http://tinyurl.com/yt599

Among other things (including the dig at Piazza in the title, saying that witnessing greatness at Shea is a "rarity"), he claims that everyone should blindingly worship Bonds because everyone has access to steroids, and Bonds was better than everyone else to begin with. Also that (pre sinus infection) the Mets need to challenge Bonds no matter what the game situation, and then get back to the fantasy that they have a chance at the playoffs after the three game series. In other words, forget baseball and competition- let's just see a one-man show; and if necessary, hand the Giants three wins.

I have so much to say about the stupidity of the article, but it's nothing the rest of you won't already think of when reading it.

Bottom line: Apparently you can get away with saying *anything* these days as long as you couch it in commentary about how bad you think the Mets and Fred Wilpon are.
