The Shea Hot Corner

No offense to my buddy Norm, the REAL Shea Hot Corner, David Wright, is making it known with his torrid play that he wants a taste of the big show sooner rather than later. The Daily News has a nice article on Wright today.

After play last night, Wright was hitting .356/.472/.635 with 17 extra base hits, 17 walks, and 12/15 in stolen bases.

Its 17 XBH's, but thats just a technicality. The kid is progressing rapidly in a pitchers league. In addition to Wright's own performance, the play of Jason Phillips may pull Zeile over to 1B and Wright into the majors (who knows about Wigginton). Will Wright replace Reyes as THE ONE?

If Reyes can get healthy, I'd be very happy with THE TWO. Wright is clearly a better hitter than Reyes, with his ability to hit for power, command the plate, and run the bases effectively. Reyes is a marvelous talent, and his speed and defense will provide a welcome complement to Wright.

Wigginton and Phillips, as of now, don't really fit into the Mets long-term plans. They would both be useful bench players, particularly since Phillips can catch. At this point, I seriously doubt either has the skill to be starting at the big league level.

I concede the title of the real Shea Hot Corner to Norm. That guy rocks. He’s a very good speller also.

Whatever you say, David. Keep up the good work.

We desperately need THE TWO. But what's going on with Reyes? Are the Mets doctors attaching leeches to the hamstring as their most recent sophisticated treatment? I wouldn't necessarily consider Wright the better hitter yet. Reyes has performed at the MLB level and is younger. I think Wiggy has always been viewed as a stopgap. I expected more from Phillips (obviously).

I have no doubt at all that, if it's one or the other, the Mets are far better off with Phillips than Wigginton in the line-up. Wigginton's approach is just awful -- swinging at the first pitch, showing no control of the strike zone. Phillips takes pitches, and I am confident will over a full season produce substantially better numbers.

So what does Art Howe do? When Wigginton comest off the DL, he reduces Phillips's playing time, even to the point of starting Vance Wilson behind the plate today.
