Mets No No-No Info

Mark Simon of ESPN Research has his daily "Baseball Tonight Extra" column today featuring Mets no-hitter near misses. If you don't already, you should definitely check his column out regularly. The hosts of BBTN may be utterly useless and unwatchable, but Mark and the rest of the research department are top notch.

Mets.com also features a list of the 27 one-hitters in Mets history.

I just wanted to add a note about Tom's near perfect game. It was not against a scrub hitting lineup by any means... this makes it all the more impressive. He doesnt throw it that fast, but his precision and psychological game are amazing.

P.S: If Glavine keeps this up, our record should really do well.

Let's not get carried away. Take away Castilla, Johnson, and Burnitz, and this is basically a AAA lineup. Take those three out of Coors, and you've got the following in 2004:

Castilla: .231/.291/.500
Johnson: .228/.323/.509
Burnitz: .230/.313/.541

Still good slugging, but the AVGs and OBPs are pretty awful. Let's not forget that Todd Helton, Preston Wilson, and Larry Walker were not playing, and this is hardly a powerhouse.

Possibly it wasn't a powerhouse line-up, but it was still good pitching. Trach's performance last night was as well, and there was nothing lacking in the Phillies line-up. It's encouraging to see reliable pitching.

Of course it was good pitching -- it was great pitching. Let's not pretend he one-hit the Cardinals, though.

Lets take it for what it is. Most of the classic pitching performances are vs. teams that cannot be confused with the 1975 Reds. What I find interesting in Met lore is that Terry Leach, prototypical spot starter, had 20 career starts with two 3 hitters and a one-hitter.
