Heyman On Crack

Here we go again. It's bad enough when rag-toters like Jon Heyman are bashing the Mets. It's far worse when they go around trying to fix the Mets.

In his latest installment, he suggests the Mets would be interested in Devil Rays' manager Lou Piniella. Fine, I'll bite. The Mets failed to land Sweet Lou two years ago when the Mariners made him available, mostly because the trade cost was to high. They wound up signing Art Howe and Piniella went to Tampa in exchange for Randy Winn. Lou would be a good kick in the pants for the Mets, so I'll endorse his recruitment.

The problem, of course, is the cost, and that problem is two-fold. Firstly, the Mets would have to eat the remaining two years on Howe's deal, plus pay top-dollar for Piniella. Beyond that, Tampa will surely demand a prospect or two. Who does Heyman suggest the Mets offer?
Piniella engineered his trade out of Seattle two years ago under the pretense of going home and probably isn't inclined to publicly get the ball rolling again. It's a delicate situation for Tampa, too, which has written its advertising campaign around its lone star (its manager) and would surely insist on a haul. In keeping with Tampa's desire to employ the teen-aged, we suggest offering pitcher Yusmeiro Petit and outfielder Lastings Milledge, both 19.
Emphasis is mine. So is the vomit in my mouth. Get f!@#king real, Heyman. And who's the "WE" that Heyman insists on throwing under the bus along with himself?

Mets try to make it two-in-a-row tonight as they host the Phillies at home. Go Phils!

I don't know if Heyman thinks the majority of Mets fans are just completely oblivious and that they might think this is a good idea... or if he REALLY thinks this is a good idea.

Either way, it's all bad.

He thinks it's a good idea, which is absurd.

What's more unbelievable is that he suggests them as if it would be a lowball offer to Tampa. Like, "See if they'll let Piniella go for only Petit and Milledge".

Acknowledging the need to replace Howe, why do we need to have a "superstar" like Piniella? It's just not worth it, especially if it would cost ANY talent to obtain the guy.

The most successful managers in Mets history (Hodges, Berra, Johnson & Valentine) were by no means people who had teams clamoring for their services when they joined the Mets. Can't we look for a good baseball guy with a track record of success as a player and some history with the team? What about Wally Backman, a hot shot managing prospect in the White Sox system? Willie Randolph, a class act with a championship pedigree? There are a lot of names out there.

As for the suggestion that Petit and Milledge are legitimate trade chips for a manager, I am speechless. I mean, really, this is the kind of thinking that decimates farm systems. We took some big shots this year, losing Kazmir, Peterson, Huber & Hill in a failed attempt to play significant games in August and September. Maybe Soler and Humber make up some of that talent deficit, but if we start looking to trade guys like Petit and Milledge as additional quick fixes...

The Mets clearly will not (right?!?!) trade Petit and/or Milledge for Piniella. I'd be fine with Backman or Randolph. Heck, bring up HoJo and see what he can do.

Gil Hodges was actually fairly sought-after, as the Mets sent Bill Denehy and $150,000 to the Washington Senators for him in 1968.

And on July 30th prior to 5pm, what would you guys say about the Kazmir for Zambrano trade? Remember, we're discussing Wilpon and Co. here.

Absolutely absurd. Now suggest Petit & Milledge for Billy Beane and you're on the right track....

I'll bet that even Heyman - pathetic soul that he is - doesn't even buy into this tripe. He probably just gets off on the negative reaction columns like this undoubtedly generate.

I just figure he throws dreck like this out there to ensure some job security. Most fans have no idea who the Mets lower level prospects are, and if the Mets ever did listen to him he'd have ample ammunition to pound them with for the forseeable future.
