The Rumor Mill

Jeremy Heit mentioned it the other day, but Peter Gammons finally put it in print today:
The Mets won't have fun, fun, fun until Daddy takes the Lear Jet away. Omar Minaya is a very good evaluator, but Junior Wilpon made trades and blamed Jim Duquette. Between Junior and their New York PR guy, the Mets provide us all with a ton of laughs. Right now I'd bet on Jose Reyes going to Texas for Alfonso Soriano, to play right, with Omar-favorite Orlando Cabrera signing with them for $32 million and four years.
I'm not sure which suggestion is the most absurd:

a) Trading Jose Reyes for Alfonso Soriano
b) Having Soriano play right field
c) Paying Orlando Cabrera $8 million a year for four years

Cabrera has a .725 career OPS and a .316 career OBP. He'll be 30 in a month. I sincerely hope Gammons is joking.

Comments

I wouldn't put much stock in it. When has Gammons ever been right about anything?

There are so many things wrong with Gammons' report that I almost don't know where to start. First of all, the Mets aren't going to give anyone a four-year contract, least of all Orlando Cabrera. Secondly, the idea that Cabrera is going to make anything close to $8 million/year is preposterous, especially considering that a superior and younger (albeit slightly) player in Edgar Renteria will also be available. And even Renteria won't command those kind of dollars. If I had to guess, I'd say that Cabrera will probably end up re-signing with Boston for a couple of years at slightly more than half of what Gammons suggested to keep the position warm for 20-year old Hanley Ramirez, unless Boston can lure Renteria away from the Cards.

And why would the Mets go through with the move of Reyes back to SS and Matsui to 2B? Was it all just a charade? I'd find that hard to believe. The Mets know they have something special (not to mention cheap) in Reyes and they're not going to give that up for a chump like Soriano, not when better players are available via free agency.

Always remember the words of the immortal Steve Somers: Gammons is the only person in America that's wrong more often than I am.

Thanks, Vin. One of my favorite Gammons lines was from a few weeks ago. He was talking about the 2004 free agent class, and suggested that even though Matt Morris' ERA was high, his 15 wins showed that he "...had the heart to go deep into games..." or some such nonsense.

While I always take Gammons with a huge grain of salt, my great fear is him pulling a Jedi mind trick on Omar (or Fred):

PG:"You do not need Jose Reyes."
OM:"I do not need Jose Reyes."
PG:"You really want Alfonso Soriano."
OM:"I really want Alfonso Soriano."
PG:"John Kruk rules."
OM:"John Kruk rules."

or something like that...

I could see trading Kaz Matsui for Soriano, but no dice on Reyes. Every once in a while Gammons is right about something, but let's hope that Omar isn't as susceptible to suggestion as the Wilpons are.

You guys are all missing the joke. Gammons wasn't recommending the trade, he was predicting that the Wilpons are dumb enough to do it on their own.

Of course he's joking, David. However, it is often difficult to distinguish Gammons' humorous jabs from his usual unsubstantiated rubbish.
