You're Not Getting A Bum Off The Streets

Did anybody see the press conference yesterday? Would it have killed Willie Randolph to dress up for the event? He's there to celebrate one of the biggest free agent acquisitions in the history of the franchise and he shows up looking like he came straight from a sleepover at Lee Mazilli's house. Put on a suit you freakin' slob. Now slobs and good managers are not necessarily mutually exclusive, but show some class if you want to be taken seriously, Willie.

Of course, there's nothing like the Yankees and the Braves pissing on the Mets parade. The trade for RJ isn't a done deal, and I'm crossing all of my fingers and toes that it falls through because everyone wants the Yanks to kick in some extra cash. That or Johnson's arm falls off shortly after the deal is completed. I'll settle for anything at this point.

Pedro hasn't thrown a pitch for the Mets yet but I already like what I've seen from him. He's got a big set of grapes and he's not afraid to use them. He told reporters at his press conference that he won't put up with the type of crap that lesser beings might buckle at. I didn't hear the whole interview, but he was on Mike & The Mad Dog yesterday afternoon and didn't take their crap either. He knows that 95% of the media talk and write out of their ass and he's not going to get worked up over it.

I'm excited to think that the Mets might matter for the first time in a while. I'm excited at the prospect of the Mets actually being a team that other players, good players, want to be a part of. I'm still worried about shoulder injuries, about prime years, regression, and all of those other things that we should be worried about. What's going to happen next?

Well, it isn't a squabble over extra cash, but apparently Shawn Green doesn't care if the Yankees get Randy Johnson or not, as it looks like he's not going to waive his no trade clause.

You knew he'd come in handy down the line this offseason.

You can't blame Green if that's true. The Dodgers will be contenders and the D'Backs are just a huge mess right now.

New rumor (though a longshot) circulating on espn.com: Mike Sweeney to the Mets, Sosa to the Royals, Floyd to the Cubbies

Financial:
Sosa- 2 yrs $25 mill left, 36 yrs old
Floyd, 2 yrs, $13 mill left, 32 yrs old
Sweeney 3 yrs, $33 mill left, 31 yrs old
The rub:
Mets take on $20 mill extra in salary over 3 years w/ Sweeney. Royals save $8 mill (drop Sweeney, gain Sammy). Cubs save $12 mill (drop Sammy, gain Floyd). Also Sammy's old hitting coach from the Cubs, Jeff Pentland, is now a Royals coach.

Stats Comparison:
Sammy Sosa 04: 539 tpa, 35 hr, .332 obp, 81.1 rc, 5.94 rc/27, .264 isoP, .42 bb/k, 1.12 gb/flyb, 4.0 p/pa
Floyd 04: 457 tpa, 18 hr, .352 obp, 65.6 rc, 5.75 rc/27, .202 isoP, .46 bb/k, 1.02 gb/flyb, 3.7 p/pa
Sweeney 04: 452 tpa, 22 hr, .347 obp, 70.4 rc, 6.26 rc/27, .217 isoP, .75 bb/k, .79 gb/flyb, 3.50 p/pa

What do you all think?
The Sweeney deal looks like it won't happen, but it is definately interesting to look at and may be a cost effective solution to a JD Drew type- if we add Drew we add $40m in payroll.

If we pull off this trade we get Sweeney for 3 years at under $20m total (drop Floyd, Add Sweeney) If the Royals and Cubs to kick in some cash, we can really get a quality player in Sweeney for cheap. Say $4m from the Cubs and $2m from the Royals. Cubs still Save $7m (dump Sammy, add Floyd), the Royals still save $6m (dump Sweeney, add Sosa). Then we get a 31, 32, and 33 yr old Sweeney for $14m over 3 years. THIS would be thinking outside the box.

There's an old saying, you don't argue with people who buy ink by the barrel. Updated version should include electrons.

We've seen a bunch of these guys come through NY, starting off by challenging the press. They always lose.

Always.

See Bobby Bonilla, Ed Whitson, Dave Kingman, etc. etc. It's all good when Pedro's winning, but reporters have long memories, and Pedro is infamous for doing stupid things (like taking days off in the middle of a pennant drive.)

He pulls something like that, the reporteres will swoop in and the boo birds will start. Pedro will react to the boos, which will bring more and more abuse. it could get VERY ugly.

Nobody told Willie that business casual day was called off due to the press conference. I question Willie's "skill sets"

Let´s wait a bit on the negative opinions regarding Willie. As far as I am concerned, if the players are comfortable playing for him and he is able to manage with the best of them, putting the Mets atop the division, he can wear his underwear from the 1978 World Series.

I'm not questioning Randolph's managerial credentals, I just thought he could have spiffed it up a bit for Pedro and Omar.
